You’re not gonna believe this……
I have been to many a burning man over the years. It was actually a brain child of myself and a friend named Frankie Sharp. What’s Burning Man? What it was and what it’s become are two very different things.
What it is now is a commercial event where individuals head out into the desert to do drugs and look at art and have sex. What it was, for me, initially was a creative outlet where I could express myself physically and mentally.
It all started in 1985 in San Francisco with Mr Sharp and myself getting frequently annoyed with the “scene” in California. We needed a place we could create and procreate. With whomever and wherever we chose. I am naturally, being a man of adventure, at home anywhere, so the desert seemed like a perfect fit.
Off we went, very little supplies and a dream. Frankie was apprehensive but I assured him we were all set with arts and crafts of all sorts, if you catch my drift. We ended up staying in the desert for weeks, making art and entertaining a bevy of beauties, mine were always prettier than Frankie’s but that’s neither here or there. Anyway, we loved it. True creative freedom and license. We decided to invite a few friends one of which was Larry Harvey a local artist (hack) who I found incredibly annoying but was a good friend of Frankie’s. We brought him out on a particular day that I had created a rather large sculpture of a man. Mr. Harvey had brought a few unsavory characters and began to litter and party very loudly. It was obnoxious. I did what I thought was the best to ward them off I lit my giant man on fire in the hopes that they would run for the hills of Beverly. What they did was begin to dance around it in some sort of ritualistic tribe. I was shocked and appalled. I left in disappointment. Head held low.
I never returned to that desert and from what I understand now it has become quite the event with many people creating and enjoying themselves. Mr Harvey and the bevy of celebrities can have that event. I know what it truly stands for and what it means to Frankie and myself. I can never have it again. Burning man? Hmph I guess now I’m the Yearning Man, yearning for a simpler time. Until next time.
