One man will become X-Division Champion at Homecoming. We are promised a new Champion on January 6th LIVE in Nashville. The question now is, who will be Champion? Who will qualify for Ultimate X and what does it mean to have this match back on IMPACT. A longtime staple of IMPACT, Ultimate X is a massive structure where the X-Division Title is suspended high above the ring by two crossing cables. The athletes have to climb the structure, make their way to the center of the ring and secure the title.
The first thing they have to do, is qualify. Those matches will begin next week and the first match will be announced later today right here on IMPACTWrestling.Com. Check back at 12PM ET on Friday to find out the first match in our qualifying matches and the first two men who have the chance to qualify for Ultimate X at Homecoming!

On the November 15th edition of IMPACT, Sami Callihan failed in his attempt to take the X-Division Championship from Brian Cage and The Machine made his intentions clear. He had achieved everything he could in the X-Division and set his sights on a bigger prize – Johnny IMPACT and the IMPACT World Championship. That match will take place on January 6th, 2019 at Homecoming in Nashville.
But what exactly is Option C and where did it come from? Let’s take a look!
In 2012 Austin Aries was having very similar feelings to Brian Cage. Off the back of a record breaking X-Division Championship reign, Aries felt he could tackle bigger fish. In fact he wanted the biggest fish. Bobby Roode was in the middle of his own record breaking World Championship reign and “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived” felt he was better than the best. Aries wanted to face Roode at that year’s Destination X event but there was one stumbling block.
Then General Manager Hulk Hogan refused to allow Aries to challenge for the World Championship while Aries was still X-Division Champion.
So Hogan gave Aries two options. Option A: Aries gives up the X-Division Championship and challenges for the World Title. Option B: Aries forgoes an opportunity at Roode in order to keep the X-Division Title. Aries is not a man who likes to be backed into a corner. He proposed Option C. Yes, he will give up the X-Division Championship and yes, he would challenge Roode but he wanted a precedent set. It shouldn’t just be an opportunity given to him but rather everybody. Every year the X-Division Champion should have the same choice to make – go for the big one or continue carry the legacy of one of the most prestigious championships in wrestling.
And so Option C was born. Aries challenged and defeated Roode for the World Championship at Destination X.
One year later Chris Sabin found himself in the exactly the same position. Would he turn over a Championship he won more times than anybody else to face Bully Ray? Would he take the gamble of putting everything on the line and potentially coming away with nothing? Sabin backed himself and, like Aries, came out on top. At Destination X 2013 he captured the World Championship.
Everybody else hasn’t been so lucky. Austin Aries tried to make lightning strike twice in 2014 but was defeated by Lashley. Rockstar Spud stepped up to face the Olympic Gold Medalist in 2015 but Kurt Angle reigned supreme.
Rather than exercise Option C, Bobby Lashley made Eddie Edwards a different offer in 2016. Winner takes all. One man would walk away with both the World and X-Division Championships and one would walk away with nothing. Edwards accepted and was defeated. Lashley held all the gold. Destination X came and went in 2017 as Sonjay Dutt – who had worked his whole career to capture X-Division gold – opted not to invoke Option C.
And that brings us to Cage. Option C has been exercised in the traditional sense four times – twice successfully and twice unsuccessfully (the odds tilt further toward unsuccessful if you include Eddie Edwards in 2016). History and statistics however mean nothing to the individual. The weight of history means nothing to The Machine. All Brian Cage ever needs is an opportunity – and he’ll get it on January 6th at Homecoming.

The IMPACT Wrestling archives are full of unforgettable matches and moments. This week on the Pluto TV Rewind, we head back to 2006 when Christian Cage defended the NWA World Heavyweight Championship against Abyss inside Six Sides of Steel!
Christian Cage was on top of the world. Just a few months prior, he made the jump to IMPACT Wrestling and instantly became one of the top stars in the company. He defeated some of the promotion’s biggest names, including “The Alpha Male” Monty Brown. To kick off the 2006 pay-per-view season, Cage teamed with “The Icon” Sting to defeat the team of Jeff Jarrett and Monty Brown.
Having scored a victory over the World Champion, Christian Cage became the top runner for a shot at Jarrett’s title. The match was made official for Against All Odds and on that night, Cage’s dream came true. After a back-and-forth battle, Cage was able to pin Jarrett with his signature Unprettier to call himself the NWA World Heavyweight Champion.
After winning the title, Christian Cage realized that the level of competition in IMPACT Wrestling was at an all-time high – and they were coming for him! Cage defended against Monty Brown at Destination X, as he quickly became one of Christian Cage’s arch-rivals. Cage was able to successfully retain the title against “The Alpha Male” but unbeknownst to the champ, a monster was lurking in the shadows.
Abyss’ maniacal father, James Mitchell, claimed that Christian Cage stole Abyss’ opportunity at the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and that Christian was to give “The Monster” a shot at the gold. If there’s one thing we know about Christian Cage, it’s that he doesn’t take commands! Cage declined Mitchell’s challenge and would soon realize his mistake. Abyss and Mitchell wanted Christian Cage’s NWA World Heavyweight Championship so bad that they were willing to go to sick lengths in order to get it. Mitchell even went as far as to involve Cage’s wife in the situation. Mitchell visited her several times in an attempt to anger Cage – and it worked. Abyss attacked an enraged Christian Cage at his home and almost drowned him in his own swimming pool when Mitchell reminded “The Monster” that he can’t win the title from a dead man!
At Lockdown 2006, the time for talk was over – Christian Cage would put his NWA World Heavyweight Championship on the line against “The Monster”, Abyss. Since this match took place at Lockdown, IMPACT Wrestling’s all-steel cage event, James Mitchell wouldn’t be able to get physically involved in the match. A man and a monster would step into the cage and only one would leave with the NWA World Heavyweight Championship around their waist. Both champion and challenger pulled out all the stops, including a jaw-dropping moment when Cage launched himself off the top of the cage to hit a huge Frog Splash on Abyss! Cage continued his momentum with a Sunset Flip Powerbomb from the top of the cage, sending Abyss back-first into a pile of thumbtacks! The final nail in the coffin was when Cage hit Abyss with the Unprettier into the thumbtacks, allowing him to score the pin and retain the NWA World Heavyweight Championship!
After the match, Mitchell would orchestrate a violent attack by Abyss with a steel chain. What happened next would shock the world – with Cage unconscious, Abyss unjustly left the arena with the World Title in his possession!
